Advanced Co-Extruder Technologies for Multilayer Pipes

Co-extruder systems are advanced extrusion solutions that process multiple raw materials within the same production cycle to manufacture multilayer, barrier and application-specific plastic pipes. Unlike single-layer extrusion, co-extrusion adds different material properties to the pipe structure, helping manufacturers achieve higher performance for specific applications. These systems provide significant advantages in multilayer pipe production lines, EVOH oxygen barrier pipes, gas pipes, PEX pipes and other technical pipe applications requiring enhanced durability or reduced oxygen permeability.

Sarem Makina develops PE, PP, PVC and PEX co-extruder machines in different output capacities, including solutions designed for EVOH and adhesive-layer applications. With production capacities ranging from 2 kg/h to 30 kg/h, each auxiliary extruder can be integrated into the main extrusion line to create precise and uniform layer structures. Screw design, heating zones, motor configuration and material-flow geometry are engineered according to the required layer thickness, polymer type and extrusion line speed.

Co-Extrusion Line Process

Sarem co-extruder systems integrate with the main plastic pipe extrusion line to introduce different polymers and functional materials into the pipe structure under controlled processing conditions. The system precisely manages material feeding, screw rotation, temperature control and layer formation throughout the production process.

Developed for multilayer plastic pipe production, these systems provide stable output, homogeneous material distribution and precise process control. They support efficient, high-standard manufacturing for PE, PP, PVC, PEX and EVOH-based pipe applications, while helping maintain consistent layer thickness and product quality.

Sarem Co-Extruder Systems for Multilayer Pipe Production

One of the most critical factors in plastic pipe co-extrusion is introducing different raw materials into the main pipe structure at the correct flow rate and processing temperature. Homogeneous plasticization, strong interlayer adhesion and stable output directly influence the mechanical performance and long-term reliability of the finished pipe. For this reason, screw geometry, gearbox design, heater quality and precise temperature control are essential elements of an efficient co-extruder system.

Sarem Makina’s multi-component extrusion systems can be engineered with single-screw, twin-screw, co-rotating or counter-rotating configurations according to the material and application requirements. Intermeshing or non-intermeshing screw designs can also be selected based on polymer characteristics. This flexible engineering approach enables manufacturers to produce durable, barrier-enhanced and application-specific multilayer pipes beyond standard single-layer plastic pipe production.

What Is a Co-Extruder?

A co-extruder is an auxiliary extrusion machine that operates alongside the main extruder to add a second or additional material layer to the product structure. It is commonly used to manufacture multilayer, barrier and technically enhanced plastic pipes.

Co-extruders are used in the production of PE, PP, PVC, PEX and multilayer composite pipes. They are especially suitable for EVOH barrier pipes, oxygen-resistant heating pipes, gas pipes and products requiring functional inner or outer layers.

A co-extruder enables different polymers to be applied with controlled thickness and uniform distribution. This improves barrier performance, durability, surface properties and overall pipe functionality while maintaining efficient material consumption.

Yes. A co-extruder is essential for applying the EVOH oxygen barrier layer and, when required, the adhesive bonding layers used in multilayer pipe structures. Precise material dosing and temperature control help maintain consistent barrier performance.

The selection should consider material type, required output capacity, layer thickness, screw design, temperature-control accuracy and compatibility with the main extrusion line. The co-extruder must also operate in synchronization with the die head and overall line speed.
